"In defense of the Z, you have to remember that when the last gen ZX came out there was really nothing that looked like it. The styling was very different from any other Z, and really from any sportscar out at the time. It was a breakthrough, and the fact that people still like the looks now says how successful they were. The Lexus is nice to look at, but didn't take anywhere near as many chances stylistically. They aimed for an inoffensive yet pleasantly styled car, and they did a fantastic job at that. Oh, and performance wise? The Z was out several years before the TT Supra and RX7. They were playing catch-up with Nissan, so they had to come out with something really wild. Put a '90 TT Z next to a '90 Supra or RX7 - there's no comparison. I recall reading a "sportscar showdown" article in one of the rags (sorry, don't remember which) in '94-95 or so. The Z came in last in the numbers, but just about every tester picked it as the car they'd most like to take home. That sounds like a car that's greater than the sum of its parts, which is a rare thing."
